new world order

Last night my landlord (who is seventy-four) was bemoaning the fact that we in North America spend so much money keeping our elderly alive for ten years longer than we should, while the world lurches under the weight of ridiculous overpopulation and poverty. He's been reading "The Upside of Down", about the inevitable downfall of the consumer/conformist "developed" nations, and was glum about our chances as a race.

We came up with a solution - a solution so breathtakingly simple that it's a wonder it's not been thought of before: all the male leaders in the entire world should step down and hand the reins over to the women. I know, I know... I'm a sexist pig who ought to be shot (or at least burned to death on a heap of bras), but hear me out.

Men are aggressive, obnoxious pigs who plow violently ahead when wisdom cries "caution". Yes, men are responsible for a few scientific "advances", but they've caused eight million times more regressions. Sure, men are handy in a pinch (like getting the lids off of pesky jam jars), but don't you think it would be better if they had women to tell them what to do?

Females can be catty, vituperative, whining, wheedling whirlwinds of pissyness - but they don't start wars. They may demand a ridiculous assortment of consumer products (products the producing of which makes for ecological disaster and economic oppression) to hide the way they actually look and to one-up the other women - but let's face it, they mostly only do this because men treat them like objects in the first place!

Sure, we'd probably end up putting down our guns and having "International Feeling Day" and "Nail Polish Wednesdays" ... but the guns would be down, right? I know it's not too likely. But what are we without our dreams? Think about it.

Interesting theory, but you just may have yourself a bunch of women with guns and WMDs pounding on each other if your theory takes flight: humans is humans. Humans don't like to get along with humans, especially when they look/think/talk/pray differently from each other, and esPEcially when there is money to be made/lost (ie, in oil).
The argument for suffrage in the 20s was that women would vote with more common sense than men, but in the end we really vote the same because we've no more nor less common sense than you. I also think it easy for women, and men, to be violent from such a distance as our war weapons now allow...
There are suicide bombers who are women, and who blow up other women, children, and men with them.
There was Reena Virk.
There is a LOT of girl on girl violence in our high schools these days.
There are child abusers, elder abusers, murderers, kindnappers, thieves, and etc, who are women-violent women.

In other news, I keep checking your blog for baby announcements. Can't wait to hear about when yours pees on YOU! Be prepared; being peed on lasts about 5 years or so (I'm guessing: my oldest is four and still occasionally peeing his pants, as you know). The snot never runs out. The poop never runs out and is really quite gross. The crying doesn't stop until about 13 (boys) or never (girls). And you never stop worrying about them.
But every second is worth it.

hey josh... i actually just read something about that in Slate Magazine... apparently, in india starting in oh, about 1991, 1/3 of village councils were restricted to only female candidates.

several economists analyzed the outcomes, and concluded that villages led by women tended to have greater investment in "public good" type projects - water pumps, roads, schools, etc. - that benefit the entire community than similar villages led by men.

but at the same time, even though they may have been more "effective", women leaders are appreciated less than their male counterparts.

something to think about... is it true that even if women lead us towards "better outcomes," we won't appreciate them and will complain more? what does that say about us?

(maybe women in leadership isn't the be-all/end-all of solutions, but i can't see how they could do worse... men have screwed things up a lot... give the women more of a chance.)

if you want to check out more, go to Slate.com and search for "Lessons from India in gender politics"...

any baby yet?

let us know...
